rhythms / rituals
The morning is my favourite time of day.
Its full of potential, a full day lies ahead and parts of it are free for us to own.
Lately, a new rhythm is what I need as I have a work schedule I need to get organised for.
Also I need to be on the bus by 7.40am. Yep, ungodly really. Anyho.
After a few weeks of not really thinking about my morning, a few of my most fun morning rituals got dropped. I wasnt even aware, until I started to feel a bit flat. A big meh.
So what to do with change. There’s plenty of it; kids start school, kids finish school, we change jobs, kids change schools, we change where we live, work from home, return to work. So many to choose from.
So just this week I asked myself:
What’s working? Tea does.
What’s worth keeping but reworking? I love morning pages, so that’s definitely staying. But reading needs to change, I can do this on the bus (but OMG the bus ride is such good people watching, so not sure how long my book reading can last here).
How does it all feel? Its a small bit of trial and error, but its all coming together.
These are worthwhile questions to sit with. We dont need to rush to answer them, but simply let them brew. The mornings are important. They can determine the quality of the day, the tone, the mood or the vibe, choose which rituals or rhythms works for you.
Here’s my current morning rhythm:
Brew a small pot of tea; 1/2 a teaspoon of French Breakfast Tea & 1/2 French Earl Grey.
I take my pen and my notebooks, head to the dining table for morning pages. I try to fill up 2 to 3 pages of writing, no pauses, just write it all out. It can be mundance, it can be scary, it can be enlightening. Just keep going & watch for the nuggets that drop. New ways of seeing things, truths you can bear to sit with, a nudge to call a friend. The writing down of all of it, makes way for the gold.
Next I read my Life Love List (goals, values, things I love).
Often my morning pages link up with my list.
I LOVE seeing the synchronicities.
My morning rhythm or ritual gives me the steering wheel. It provides a moment of time for contemplation, which offers space for intentional and deliberate living.
Ritual > contemplation > intentional and deliberate living <
What makes up your morning? What are your morning rituals or rhythms?
Can you take a moment when you have some free time, and mentally review your morning. Is it working? What works? What needs to change? When do you get to review your values? Checking in that you feel aligned with what you are creating?
Our life is our greatest work of art after all, so make sure you’ve got all your art supplies.
