growing your interests
Interests, passion projects, aka ‘HOBBIES’! Yes, I’m kinda gently yelling to you about hobbies. I wrote a little about it on Instagram here but I’m going to dive a bit deeper because I don’t know about you but somedays I feel that we really have to hone a craft before we can even dare to call it a hobby. How’s the algorithm too, sending you and I down some rabbit hole just as we dare to pick up a needle, or a brush, or the camera. Are you with me?
my dining table that has more craft on it (at any time) than knives, forks and plates.
I bet if you look around, or look back at your younger self you’ll remember/see things that you were into, like sewing, crafting in any way, painting, photography. Now that both of my kids have finished school, there’s a world of relief (😂) a bit of space. Well particularly RN as BOTH our kids are away working at US Summer Camps for 4 months!!! And our gorgeous doggie Teddy died and went to heaven, my husband cried for two weeks. So you can see there’s a bit of space here.
And so, I noticed that with this time I started to click a bit more (not just on amazon lol) but on my phone 📱 and then I got a bit of momentum and started to look at buying an actual camera and that led onto a purchase & my taking it all places 📷 I LOVE IT. I am in heaven with this little machine.
If I look back, riiiiiiiight back, I can see this little soft creative thread running through my life, career and passions. From my time at Revlon Cosmetics, to Trimex where I worked on global brands like Hugo Boss Fragrances, to teaching Yoga (loved doing my own artwork for workshops) to now, working at a Dementia focused Social Club > lots of craft!<. There it was, in different guises and capacities.
If you cast your mind back, what do you see? What did your little self love? Did you go to outings with a little handbag with your goodies, were you stirring mud cakes, riding your bike with your friends on adventures. Are now are you the friend that organises outings, are you the person quietly doodling in a notebook, are you looking at those knitting needles, or are you in a pickle about just starting something? I get you.
Its just about starting.
What would it feel like to just write something down, a few words about what you’d like to try?
Or could you just whisper it to yourself in the shower (or bath if you are a bath person)?
Can you print and cut out things that are peaking your interest? Not a mood board, but heck it could be, just a place to start. Love Pinterest for moods.
Maybe make a playlist that gives you hella good feelings and then notice what comes? Kinda like wooing yourself as you soften the judgement so that ‘still small voice’ gets its moment.
Hobbies, Passion Projects, Interests, I believe WE NEED THEM.
THEY ARE OXYGEN!
They GIVE US so much, its not even tangible but when you know, you know.
